Sherrill, who was recently re-elected to a fourth term representing New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, declared her candidacy in a video on Monday, Nov. 18. Gov. Phil Murphy is not eligible to run for re-election in 2025 due to term limits.

The video, "Build Something," touts her background as a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and serving as a helicopter pilot in the Navy.

"In a crisis the worst thing you can do is freeze," Sherrill said. "You have to choose to lead, to follow or get out of the way. We can either stand aside or we can get to work on New Jersey's future. I know which one I pick. In NJ, we don't whine, we work."

As governor, Sherrill said she wants to build more housing, fix the economy and make the state more affordable.

"These challenges aren't new and it's time to confront them head on," Sherrill said.

The New Jersey congresswoman faces stiff competition for the Democratic nomination. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, former Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller, Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-NJ, and former New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney have declared their candidacies.

Sherrill said also she wants to protect rights and freedoms that will be under attack from "Donald Trump's Washington."
